The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has published its response to the Great British Insulation Scheme (formerly known as ECO+), which aims to deliver energy efficiency upgrades in homes in Great Britain.

What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?

Previously known and consulted on as ECO+, the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) will target the worst performing households across the country, helping people to insulate their homes, make them more energy efficient, and save money on their energy bills.

The scheme aims to increase help for low-income households, as well as extend support to those in the lower Council Tax bands and those with the least energy-efficient homes (holding an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D and below). It is estimated that the new £1 billion scheme will help around 300,000 households with the cost of installing new home insulation and will save consumers around £300 -£400 a year on their bills.

The scheme is due to launch by Summer 2023 and will run until March 2026.

How does the scheme work?

The scheme works by obligating energy suppliers to help customers to reduce their heating bills through the installation of energy efficiency measures, such as loft and cavity wall insulation. The cost of these measures may be partially or fully subsidised, depending on the proposed measure and any property issues.

Once the scheme launches in the summer, households will be able to check their eligibility via GOV.UK or a participating energy supplier or local authority. If a household is eligible, they will then be contacted about arranging a survey of their home and to organise any installation.
