Why are Heat Loss Assessments Required?
Heat Loss Assessments are essential for determining the correct size of heating systems in buildings, especially in dwellings. They ensure that heating systems are neither undersized—leading to inefficient operation and higher running costs—nor oversized, which would result in unnecessary installation expenses. By accurately sizing the system, Heat Loss Assessments help achieve cost-effectiveness and optimal performance.
Correct sizing of heating systems is particularly critical when transitioning from older systems to modern ones, for example from a gas boiler to a heat pumps, that operate at lower flow temperatures.
Additionally, the heat loss calculation considers factors such as the construction of the building, heat retention, room-by-room heat needs, and ventilation, in order to accurately size heating systems and ensure that they are both efficient and cost effective.
What’s involved in a Heat Loss Assessment?
Heat Loss Assessments involves calculating the amount of heat energy that escapes from a building through its walls, windows, floors, and roof.
The process includes assessing the building’s fabric, room dimensions, air change rates, desired internal temperatures, and the lowest external temperatures during winter.
Using the floor plan and assessment data, room-by-room heat loss calculations can be completed using Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Calculator software to determine the space heating requirements in line with current standards (BS 12831:2017).

If you’re completing a Heat Loss Assessment as a standalone activity for a 3-bedroom semi-detached house, not combined with an EPC assessment or Floor plan, the data collection on-site will take around 45 minutes. Inputting the data into the Heat Loss Calculator will then take a further 30-45 minutes, which means that in total, the entire process will typically take around 1.5 hours.
Following successful completion of the training, you will be eligible to join Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Assessor Competency Scheme.
In order to join the scheme you will need to pay a one-off application fee of £95 + VAT. Moreover, in order to use Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Calculator you will need to pay an annual licence fee of £350 + VAT.
Most people offer Heat Loss Assessments alongside other services they provide and the amount you can charge may vary depending on the size and complexity of the property.
However, as a Heat Loss Assessor, you can charge significantly more for an assessment in comparison to a standard EPC assessment or equivalent.
Becoming a Heat Loss Assessor will allow you to accurately measure the size of heating systems, such as heat pumps. This is a service that can cater to your existing customer base, including individual homeowners, housing associations working on retrofit projects or new build developers.
As alternative heating systems to gas boilers continue to grow in popularity across the country, regulatory frameworks are expected to evolve, leading to greater future demand.
Elmhurst has developed a bespoke software for producing heat loss calculations. This software is exclusively available to Elmhurst Heat Loss Assessor Competency Scheme Members and is aligned with current standards (BS 12831:2017).
There are alternative heat loss calculators in the market. However, these may produce inconsistent results, as there is no standard methodology or regulation.
If you have completed the Level 3 ABBE Surveying and Calculation of Building Heat Loss qualification or equivalent, then you may be eligible to claim a discount on this course.
