Heat Loss Calculator

Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Calculator is a user-friendly online tool designed to accurately estimate the heating requirements of residential properties.

It provides an indicative heat loss value for both the entire house and individual rooms. This information is invaluable for calculating peak heat demand, aiding in the proper sizing of heating systems and ensuring accurate emitter sizing for each room.

How to Access

To access the Heat Loss Calculator, you must have completed Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Assessor Training and be a registered member of Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Assessor Competency Scheme.

The software will be accessible through Elmhurst’s Member Portal, and separate login instructions will be provided to users.

Why use Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Calculator?

Other heat loss calculators can often be over complicated, with input requirements that can make them difficult to navigate and less user-friendly. Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Calculator, developed alongside specialists Build Test Solutions (BTS) and MCS, stands out for its simplicity and reliability:

User-Friendly Design: Adheres to industry standards while offering a streamlined, intuitive user experience.

Comprehensive Data Inputs: Easily populate raw data using guided selections based on trusted industry defaults from CIBSE, BRE, Government National Standards, and Domestic Heating Design Guides (DHDG).

Customisable Inputs: Users can override standard assumptions for inputs such as U-values, air permeability, air change rates, and heat transfer coefficients, providing more control over calculations.

✅ Compliance Assured: Calculations completed through this tool will be compliant with the latest British Standards (BS EN 12831-1:2017)

Compliance Warnings: If any non-compliant adjustments are made (e.g., overriding certain inputs), the tool flags these changes to ensure you remain within MCS MIS 3005-D standards for heat pump design.

Accurate and Flexible: While maintaining compliance with the latest regulations, it allows flexibility for more advanced users to tailor their inputs where necessary.

To use the heat loss calculator you will require basic building information, such as:

  • Property location and building specification (age, type etc)
  • Ventilation system type
  • Room information and design temperatures
  • Element information (U-values) for walls, floor, ceilings, windows and doors
  • Dimension information for the elements within each room

To access the Heat Loss Calculator, you must have completed Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Assessor Training and be a registered member of Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Assessor Competency Scheme.

A software licence (charged at £350 + VAT) will be available to purchase when you go to join the scheme. Following this you will be able to access the Heat Loss Calculator through Elmhurst’s Member Portal.

Elmhurst is championing the creation of a network of trained, assessed, competent Heat Loss Assessors who have comprehensive knowledge of heat loss calculations in order to produce accurate and consistent results in line with BS 12831.

At present, there will be people in the industry who remain untrained, and using free calculator tools which do not meet the necessary standards.

Elmhurst’s on demand Heat Loss Assessor training course is suitable for Domestic Energy Assessors (DEAs), Retrofit Professionals, Air Testers, Heat Pump Installers, Building Surveyors, Retrofit Installers, or anyone interested in mastering Heat Loss Calculations.
