Elmhurst launch ABBE Level 5 Retrofit Coordinator Training
At the Elmhurst National Conference 2025 on Wednesday 12th February 2025, Elmhurst unveiled their new ABBE Retrofit Coordinator training. Delivered via a blended learning approach of on-demand and instructor-led training, this course allows delegates to gain a Level5 ABBE Qualification in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Management.

What does a Retrofit Coordinator do?
A retrofit coordinator plays a key project management role within the whole house retrofit process and they are responsible for managing the project from inception to completion. To comply with PAS 2035, every domestic retrofit needs to be managed by a qualified Retrofit Coordinator, and with the growing demand of the retrofit industry, the demand for qualified retrofit coordinators is high.
During the process Retrofit Coordinators will need to liaise with a variety of stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the project, such as: Building Owners, Retrofit Assessors, Retrofit Designers and Retrofit Installers. They’ll need to undertake tasks such as completing risk assessments, developing a retrofit project plan and medium term plan whilst also documenting the progress of the project.
Why become a Retrofit Coordinator?
The retrofit sector is one of the fastest-growing in the industry, driven by the availability of property improvement grants and funding, regulatory requirements (such as Domestic MEES and Net Zero targets) and consumers generally taking more of an interest in improving the energy efficiency of their homes. With the increasing number of whole house retrofits taking place across the UK, Retrofit Coordinators are in high demand. This presents an exciting opportunity for current energy efficiency professionals and new entrants to upskill and capitalise on the growing market.
Andrew Parkin, Technical Development Director at Elmhurst speaks to the importance of this training and role for the industry:
“The domestic retrofit market is growing in size and significance every year. The overall task is to retrofit up to 28 million homes in the UK by 2050; reducing carbon emissions to zero wherever practicable, whilst ensuring occupants are warm, heathy and have reduced energy bills. Every home is different, and every occupant is on a different pathway and will want different things. This is complex work and there is a lot to do in 25 years.
The funded market (ECO, Warm Homes etc) is established and will move forwards as we enter the later part of this decade, and in a similar period, the owner-occupied market (sometimes referred to as Able to Pay) will see new and innovative financing products come on stream. All of which will involve high quality, well managed projects.
It is essential therefore that we have a growing, competent workforce of Retrofit Coordinators, the key role within the governments retrofit standard (PAS 2035), who are then supported by the industry leading accreditation scheme, to ensure we are able to successfully meet this demand. I am very excited about what we can achieve with this course and how we will revolutionise the market.”

Elmhurst’s Retrofit Coordinator Training
How has our training been developed?
Elmhurst’s new Retrofit Coordinator Training has been developed with the key aim of preparing delegates to step straight in to the industry, not just provide theoretical knowledge. With our extensive experience with PAS 2035 and our daily interactions with retrofit coordinators as a Trustmark approved scheme, we have been able to develop our training course to address the challenges that practicing Retrofit Coordinators face within the industry. Through our support and auditing of Retrofit Coordinators we have gained a better understanding and appreciation of their role and the training required to help them succeed.
How is our training delivered?
Our Retrofit Coordinator training is delivered via a blended learning approach, with 30 Hours of on-demand training to complete prior to 3 days of instructor led learning which can be completed live online or in the classroom. The on-demand section of the course will cover the theoretical knowledge Retrofit Coordinators need, whilst the 3 days of instructor-led training will look a practically applying that knowledge using industry leading tools and software. During the instructor-led training, delegates will get hands-on with example retrofit projects, running through a retrofit project from start to finish as part of their portfolio work needed to complete the course.
On completion of the course, delegates will receive a Level 5 ABBE Qualification in Retrofit Coordination and Risk management. This course does require some previous experience within the built environment industry or a relevant Level 3 qualification.
Josh Wakeling, Head of Training at Elmhurst comments:
“We’ve listened to feedback from many of our Retrofit Coordinator members who felt unprepared for the practical demands of their roles after completing their qualifications. In response, we’ve developed a comprehensive Retrofit Coordinator course that combines both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring our trainees are ready to tackle real-world retrofit projects with confidence. Our new training course goes beyond traditional academic education by offering a hands-on approach that equips participants to excel from day one. As we step into 2025, we are proud to set new standards for excellence and innovation in training.”
