Why carry out Measured Energy Performance Assessments?

As we push for net zero buildings, it is ever more important that we measure and understand how buildings actually perform in practice (not just theory).

Measured Energy Performance assessors are driving the industry forward, allowing for greater understanding about how buildings perform in practice; using on site physical measurements, it’s an incredibly rewarding job that can be completed alongside other assessments and services.

This information provides greater understanding of a buildings performance, providing insight into any potential issues or defects and allowing for more informed decisions to be made. Further benefits of conducting MEP assessments include:

  • Demonstrating outcomes of a retrofit project have been achieved.
  • Satisfying funding and regulatory requirements.
  • Accurate sizing of heat pumps.
  • New build validation.
  • Product validation.

Why become a Measured Energy Performance Assessor?

As a Measured Energy Performance assessor, you can:

Drive the industry forward

By understanding the actual performance of buildings, we can create a better understanding of our building stock, diagnose potential problems and defaults and make more informed decisions. As an MEP assessor, you will be a leading force in driving the industry forward and creating healthier and happier homes for all.

Build more revenue streams

Measured Energy Performance assessments can be carried out alongside other energy assessment services that you may currently offer, such as domestic energy assessments, on-construction energy assessments and retrofit services. By offering MEP assessments, you can expand your service offering and increase your customer base.

Become a member of the Measured Energy Performance Scheme

Once you’ve completed your training, you can join the Measured Energy Performance Scheme. The scheme offers fantastic benefits for members, such as dedicated technical support, entry into our Search for Assessor Facility and much more!

What’s involved in Measured Energy Performance assessments?

There are a number of ways to measure the energy performance of a building. This training course focuses on Smart Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC), which provides an indication of the true performance of the building that can be directly compared with the predicted performance.

Assessment process:

As a Measured Energy Performance Assessor, you will visit a dwelling during the heating season (October to March). Depending on the methodology used, you will collect the required data either overnight or over a 21 day period. Following the assessment, you will process the information collected using the relevant methodology software to create the HTC value.

There are a number of different methodologies that can be used to measure HTC. Each method has its own equipment and software requirements.

On completion of our Measured Energy Performance training course you will be required to carry out the Methodology specific training with Build Test Solutions (other methodology providers are available).

Further information can be found on the link below:

There are no specific skills required in order to complete the Measured Energy Performance (MEP) Training or to become an MEP assessor.

The course will provide you with everything you need to get started in this area of work.

Elmhurst’s online, on-demand training course is around 2-3 hours, followed by a short competency test.

You are also required to carry out the Methodology specific training with Build Test Solutions (other methodology providers are available).

Most people offer MEP assessments alongside other services they provide and the amount you can charge may vary depending on the size and complexity of the property.

However, as an MEP assessor, you can charge significantly more for an assessment in comparison to a standard Domestic Energy Assessment or equivalent.

Becoming a Measured Energy Performance assessor will allow you to measure the Heat Transfer Co-efficient of a building, using on site physical measurements.

This is a service that can cater to your existing customer base, including individual homeowners, housing associations working on retrofit projects or new build developers.

As a Measured Energy Performance assessor, you will need to have access to the relevant equipment in order to undertake your assessment.

The specific equipment you require will depend on which methodology training you have completed.

As an example, if you have completed methodology training with Build Test Solutions, you will need access to:

  • Sensors (approx. £230 for pack of 5)
  • Software calculation (costs starting at £10 per property).

For more information on the methodology training costs, please visit the BTS Website (other methodology providers are available).
